Job Description:
Under limited supervision, responsible for planning and orchestrating the day to day life of the herd, animals, maintenance of all riding equipment and management of the pastures at Camp Misty Meadows. The Barn Manager is a residential position that is expected to be “on-call” for emergency tasks during off-hours. This position requires flexibility to work overtime, extended days and/or weekends as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following and other duties as assigned.
- Management/development of part-time barn staff/feeding assistants.
- Maintain all herd-related equipment, supplies and feed inventory.
- Ensure that each horse has been appropriately fitted for all necessary tack/equipment, tack/equipment is identified for each horse, and make minor repairs to tack/equipment as required.
- Communicate and work with the necessary equine medical personnel regarding horse injuries, deaths or diseases. Schedule visits and contact veterinarian for major injuries/illness and farrier as needed. Maintain all medical records mandated by federal, state & county government regulations on each animal.
- Dispense and apply prescribed medications and treatments.
- Work in partnership with the Equitation Program Manager to establish working schedules to be carried out by veterinary staff, farriers and other horse care professionals.
- Work with the County Extension Agent and Director, Facilities and Services to develop and implement an optimal pasture maintenance program in order to ensure quality hay production and good year-round grazing.
- Submit hay, soil and fecal samples on a regularly scheduled basis for analysis and evaluation.
- Maintain in good working condition the barn, paddocks, trailers, panels and other physical assets related to equitation. Maintain all fences and gates in good working order.
- Maintain safe and sanitary condition of stalls, pens, tack rooms, arenas, pastures, trails and fences making repairs as necessary. Report, in writing, those major repairs that will require planning and budgeting to the Director, Facilities and Services.
- Work with Overnight Camp staff during the summer months to ensure a healthy herd and a safe riding environment.
- Meet routinely with the Director, Facilities and Services and/or his designee to report on all herd management activities. Keep supervisor abreast of all unusual or emergency situations. Maintain current records for maintenance and upkeep of all equitation facilities, equipment, tack and pastures.
Qualifications:
- Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or three to five years veterinary science or animal husbandry experience required.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Requires working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, and other Council systems, as well as printing and retrieving reports. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word preferred. Experience navigating Intranet and Internet is also required.
- Valid Texas driver’s license and proof of insurance. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required. Must be First Aid/AED/CPR certified. Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) Instructor certification preferred.
