Horse Riding Program Director – Hidden Valley Camp
Hidden Valley Camp is an overnight arts and outdoors summer camp in beautiful Maine. HVC offers 4-week, 8-week, and 2-week “intro” sessions for children ages 8-14. Campers from all over the world choose from 50+ distinctive, professionally-led activities spanning the visual and performing arts, water and land sports, horseback riding, culinary arts, nature and adventure. Located on a private lake in mid-coast Maine, HVC has fostered community ideals in a lively, inclusive setting since 1948.
Hidden Valley Camp offers a wide range of activities, including a well-established and popular equestrian program. We pride ourselves on our commitment to providing high-quality instruction, fostering a love for horses, and ensuring the safety and well-being of both our campers and horses. Our riding program focuses on English riding at beginner through advanced levels. We strive to teach riding skills and horse care in a safe and fun atmosphere.
About the Role:
The Horse Program Director will be responsible for all aspects of the Horseback Riding Program including management of the riding instruction program; animal care (feeding, wellbeing & cleanliness of horses); cleanliness of Horse barn, riding rings and equipment shed; staff direction and evaluation; preparation and direction of Horse Shows for internal camp equestrian events.
Responsibilities
● Overall organization of the program
● Instruction: Design and deliver engaging and effective riding lessons for campers of various ages and skill levels (beginner to advanced, as applicable). Beginning instruction starts in one of our three rings and progresses to some low jumping and trail riding on our 300 acre facility.
● Safety: Maintain a safe learning environment by enforcing camp and stable rules, conducting safety checks, and providing clear instructions to campers. Be prepared to handle emergency situations calmly and efficiently.
● Lead a staff of 7-8 and assist in the development of staff.
● Horse Care: Participate in daily horse care routines for 15 horses, including grooming, tacking, and untacking horses for lessons. Ensure the horses are fit and appropriately prepared for lessons.
● Communication: Communicate effectively with campers, counselors, and camp leadership regarding lesson schedules, progress updates, and any concerns.
● Equipment and Facility Maintenance: Assist in maintaining the barn, riding equipment, riding areas, and ensuring its proper working condition.
Qualifications
Possess skills and confidence in the leading and organization of English horsemanship.
● At least 21 years of age.
● Proven experience as a Horse Riding Instructor with demonstrable skills in teaching riding techniques.
● CHA Certification is preferred
● Strong knowledge of horse behavior, handling, and care.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with children.
● Ability to adapt teaching methods to suit individual learning styles and needs.
● A positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a passion for horses and working with children.
● Ability to live and work in a camp environment.
Bonus Qualifications:
● Experience working at a summer camp.
● First Aid and CPR certification is highly recommended
● Certification with a recognized equestrian organization is preferred but not required.
● Experience working with children with diverse needs and riding levels
● Experience with farm equipment, i.e. tractors
Dates of Employment:
June 8th to August 22nd.
Compensation:
Competitive salary with room and board included. Up to 2 immediate family children camper tuition included as additional benefit.
