 POSITION SUMMARY

The Equestrian Program Specialist is responsible for assisting in the planning, development, and coordination of year-round equestrian education programs for girls and adult members. The Equestrian Program Specialist has responsibilities for the health and welfare of the council herd. 

ACCOUNTABILITIES

· Create, develop, evaluate and deliver all equestrian education programming as designated by the council and GSUSA. 

· Work with the Equestrian Program Coordinator to organize horseback riding schedule and activities.

· Determine outcome measures as needed. 

· Ensure that the interests, values, and needs of diverse racial, ethnic, cultural groups, and the differently abled are reflected through various equestrian program opportunities. 

· Assist in the recruitment, hiring, supervising, evaluation and training for all equestrian summer staff. 

· Assist in budget preparation and maintaining proper records and reports.

· Implement any data reports necessary to carry out the position. 

· Ensure the health and welfare of the council herd through nutrition, exercise and health maintenance.

· Maintain support facilities and equipment including arenas, paddocks, tack sheds, tack, and grounds.

· Work with the Equestrian Program Coordinator to ensure proper quality and amount of program/safety equipment.

· Maintain necessary council program records and paperwork.

· Ensure the success of the council by working in partnership with functional units, contributing to a team environment and subscribing to the overall objectives set forth in the council’s strategic plan.

· Interpret and support GSUSA and council policies and standard procedures. 

· Attend all necessary meetings.

· Identify community organizations receptive to requests for funding and speaking engagements. 

· Work with local universities and colleges to recruit students for equestrian educational programming events. 

· Provide cross over support to all other positions within the council. 

· Ensure diversity and pluralism is embraced and incorporated into the work of the council. 

· Other duties as assigned. 

Requirements

 

QUALIFICATIONS

· Be a currently registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA or willing to become one.

· Minimum of 21 years of age.

· Minimum of one year previous experience in horseback riding, teaching and equine management.

· Knowledge and ability to operate heavy machinery (i.e. tractor)

· Possess the capacity to successfully complete a criminal and background search as a required condition of employment.

· Possess knowledge of previous equestrian program development. 

· Demonstrate the ability to work independently and be self-motivated but within a team environment.

· Demonstrate professional horseback riding behavior and elicit such behavior from youth and staff.

· Exhibit strong planning and organizational skills.

· Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, including ability to handle crisis situation, resolve conflict and maturity of judgment.

· Possess the ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings/weekends; overnights maybe required. Ability to travel as job requires.

· Exhibit the ability to provide positive customer service to girls and volunteers.

· Demonstrate a commitment to the mission of the Girl Scout movement and ability to communicate the mission to others. 

· Possess a valid driver’s license that meets the council insurance company’s requirement for coverage.

· Exhibit the desire to improve and develop professionally.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

· Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching and heavy lifting.  Must be able to sit at a work station and/or a computer screen for up to 2 hours at a time. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. 

· Exposure to seasonal weather conditions.

SAFETY

All staff must be conversant with the safety rules and regulations. They must take reasonable steps to ensure their own health and safety, and that of anyone else who may be affected by their actions. They should inform their manager/supervisor of any hazard with which they are not trained to deal.
