General Description of Duties: 

The Instructor conducts equine-assisted activities and assists the Executive Director with daily operations, program and service design, and delivery when needed. This person coordinates and supervises any critical daily tasks to ensure the health and safety of riders and of horses at all times. This is not a fundraising position. 

Overview:

Awarded the 2022 Wyoming Agency of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Reach 4A Star Riding Academy is a 501(c)3 non-profit PATH Premier accredited therapeutic riding center located on 45 acres in Casper, Wyoming that was founded in 2004 and has been serving the community since 2005.  Instructors at Reach 4A Star enjoy an empowering culture where inclusion & deep respect are prioritized. Staff are encouraged to think creatively to contribute to a diverse environment, building on their knowledge and strengths. The facility includes an office, conference room, kitchen, reception area,  upstairs viewing area for spectators, tack room, large heated indoor arena with a handicap ramp and wheelchair assistance electronic mounting lift, outdoor arena, barn with stalls and corrals. An outdoor sensory trail is in progress. The Academy serves approximately 250 people in the community each year with a diverse staff of 5, including 3  therapists utilizing about 50 volunteers annually. There are currently 18 horses whose care includes special attention to bodywork  & wellness. Reach 4A Star offers adaptive riding and equine assisted learning for individual and group classes, veterans programs, specialized camp programs, Special Olympics training, occupational therapy services and offers a Certificate Program through Casper College. 

 

Casper, Wyoming is the second largest city in the state, with the population estimated to be just under 58,000. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

 
  • Conduct equine-assisted activities and the completion of proper documentation, assignment of volunteers, and ensuring safety of arena environment

  • Assist in registration and evaluation of prospective participants

  • Assist in maintenance of documentation and records for participants, volunteers, and instructors

  • Maintain confidentiality in all situations

  • Work with the staff to plan, organize, and conduct volunteer trainings. Assist with volunteer scheduling, leadership, supervision, and evaluation

  • Assist in assigning proper tack to program horses and tack to participants

  • Assist in planning and scheduling programs and events

  • Maintain knowledge of and adherence to all applicable local, state, and federal laws and R4ASRA policies and procedures

  • Assist in evaluation, training, and conditioning of horses

  • Maintain compliance with all policies and procedures of the organization

  • Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient, safe, and effective functioning of the organization

Education and Work Experience Requirements: 

 
  • PATH Certified Registered instructor (We are willing to help the right candidate become certified)

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in working with riding programs for disabled persons and equine management

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively and efficiently communicate with the executive director, instructors, participants, and other stakeholders

  • Must be able to work under pressure at times, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary attitude and behavior

  • Must be able to react to change productively

  • Must be self-sufficient, resourceful, and organized

  • Ability to work independently and with a team to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices

  • The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 50 pounds; stooping, kneeling, and bending; reaching and grasping; typing; and walking

  • This job is performed on R4ASRA property and may be dusty and dirty.  Persons with animal allergies and hay fever may be affected.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, good driving history and no previous felonious or misdemeanor convictions other than minor traffic offenses.  

  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified

Physical Requirements: 

 
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including PATH 

  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
