Job Description:

Essential Functions of the Position

  • Lead the daily operation of training equines
  • Develop and implement an individual/specific training program for each equine including general, ground, and under saddle work to meet adoption criteria (includes halter training)
  • Update animal records with training notes, as appropriate
  • Correct equine behavioral issues, report observed health or behavior issues to the Director of Equine & Livestock
  • Partner with external contract trainers on equines requiring extensive training
  • Assist in overall evaluation of equines (behavioral, medical, adoptability). Assist staff or veterinarian during medical evaluation as needed
  • Meet with potential adopters, as needed, to support the adoption process related to an equine's temperament, rideability to ensure the best match
  • Assist Cruelty Investigations off site when needed to determine temperament and hauling capability of equines
  • Share training expertise with other HSNT Equine & Livestock staff to build overall knowledge of the team
  • Conduct training seminars for the public to showcase HSNT resources for potential adopters
  • Transport equines, as needed, to or from trainers, other animal welfare organizations, owners, etc.
  • Ensure that local, state, and federal safety animal care standards are met
  • Report needs for supplies or vehicle repairs to the Director of Equine & Livestock
  • Represent the Humane Society of North Texas by providing excellent customer service
  • Protect the confidential information on customers and donors
  • Additional tasks as assigned by the Director of Equine & Livestock

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities Needed to Perform the Essential Functions of this Position

  • 4 Years steady equine experience of advanced riding and training
  • Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree in an animal field preferred
  • Proficient at working safely with untrained equines; able to professionally execute training from groundwork through riding (colt starting, advanced behavioral issues such as bucking, etc.)
  • Must have a valid Texas drivers' license and be insurable on the HSNT vehicle insurance policy. Must possess skills to drive vehicle pulling horse trailers (bumper and gooseneck styles)
  • Knowledge of Humane Society of North Texas policies and protocols, such as, but not limited to, adoption, cleaning and medical protocols
  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior
  • Ability to handle animals safely and with patience and gentleness
  • Ability to represent Humane Society of North Texas in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers, and staff
  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Humane Society of North Texas, with volunteers, the public , and be a team player
  • Must be patient, courteous and work well under stressful conditions
  • Must demonstrate initiative and flexibility in constantly changing work demands
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively

Required Professional Licensing or Certifications

  • Valid Texas Driver's license

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate

Working Conditions

  • The individual performing this job may be required to work more than 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week. Weekend work will be necessary
  • Based in Joshua, TX
