Job Description:

Result Statement:  Run and develop a fun, creative, and educational program, which helps develop campers’ pride, confidence, curiosity and knowledge through horseback riding.  Instruct campers and staff on horsemanship and western riding techniques.  Actively manage the many risks associated with horseback riding activities.  Effectively manage, coach, and communicate with Barn Staff.  Help to advance the program when possible.

Reporting Positions: Barn Manager, Barn Staff

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Preferably at least 25 years of age

  • CPR Certified

  • First Aid Certified

  • Preferably at least 5 year experience working in a riding stable environment

  • Preferably CHA level three instructor (or higher) and/or CHA Level 4 Equine Facility Manager

  • Knowledge and experience in teaching horsemanship techniques

  •  

Position Specific Duties:

Community

  • Attend and participate in meals, campfires, and other camp-wide activities.

  • Be a reliable, supportive, and positive member of the TVRC community.

  • Receive feedback from subordinates, peers, as well as supervisors.

  • Offer feedback to subordinates, peers and supervisors when you notice things well done or needing adjustment.

Job Specific

  • Herd Management
  • Must be able to ride a wide variety of horses.

  • Ride all horses and record their characteristics and attributes in a Horse Profile document. 

  • Ride and train horses so that they are usable by campers and staff.

  • Oversee all first aid needs of the horses and ensure herd is healthy

  • Maintain the pasture fence, grass and water levels.  Keep pasture free of hazards.

  • Ensure that all horses are wrangled and accounted for every day.

  • Inform Camp Director of any medical issues, herd needs or herd deaths.

Activities

  • Plan activities in advance with the Barn Manager and Program Director.

  • Coordinate the Barn Show and Barn Expo on the 2nd day of camp

  • Attend fence meetings to select campers that will join you for the activity period.

  • Lead riding activities: first degree, half-day rides, full-day rides, gymkhana, pasture games, Horsemanship, wrangling, and other special activities.

  • Teach and model good riding skills for campers and staff.

  • Oversee and support the Barn Manager and Barn Staff.

  • Run and organize 3 Rodeos and 1 Final Rodeo per season.

  • Ensure that every camper and staff member has attended “First Degree” prior to participating in any riding activities.

  • Be familiar with all trails and routes for riding on the ranch property.

      • Develop and update/maintain all written materials pertaining to barn and the horsemanship program.

Personnel Management

  • Make the barn staff schedule for daily tasks and time off.
  • Provide at least one formal evaluation with each reporting staff member during each season with the support of the Program Director.

Barn Management

  • Manage the barn facility, organization, cleanliness, stocking and sanitation, including all fencing, corrals and pastures.

  • Manage the inventory of supplies, feed and equipment in barn.

  • Order supplies, feed and equipment for the barn, as necessary.

Other Duties

  • Be an active member of the summer Leadership Team and be able to fill a role in the event of enacting the Emergency Operations Plan.  

  • Turn in receipts and invoices on time and in accordance with company policy.

  • Maintain a neat and clean “Western” appearance. 

  • Lend support in other areas of camp, as needed and when requested.

  • Abide by the staff policies.  Mentor, coach and when needed report policy violations to the leadership team.

 

Typical Schedule for Program Staff:

  • 6:30am Wrangle horses in from the previous night of grazing.

  • 7:30am – Leadership Team meeting

  • 8:00am – Wake up bell

  • 8:15am – Warning Bell

  • 8:30am – Breakfast: All staff attend meals dressed and ready for the day.

  • 9:45am – Morning Fence Meeting: Announce your morning activity to campers.

  • 9:45am-12:15pm – Morning Activity Period

  • 12:30pm – Lunch

  • 1:30-2:30pm – Rest Hour: Program staff use this time to prepare for the next activity period, take inventory, order supplies, plan for the next week, etc.

  • 2:30 – Afternoon Fence Meeting: Announce your afternoon activity to campers.

  • 2:30pm-5pm – Afternoon Activity Period 

  • 5pm – Guzzle Time: This is a free time for campers, as well as program staff.

  • 6:30pm – Dinner

  • 7:30-8:30pm – Evening Activities: Every night two different counselors will host an evening activity for the camp community like playing Battle Ball or making friendship-bracelets. Program staff are encouraged to participate in evening activities.  At this time, barn staff turn horses out to pasture for the night.

    • 8:30pm – Campfire: The entire camp community attends campfire at the end of each day. Staff are encouraged to participate in games, songs, and other campfire activities.  Staff are expected to model and promote good audience behavior.

 

Time Off:  Time off must be scheduled with your supervisor, or another member of the management team.  Time off for this position is usually 4 days per season.  This amount may vary depending upon job performance, timing, and other factors. 

 

Essential Functions to Perform Duties:

  • Ability to follow TVRC staff policies

  • Ability communicate with co-workers and be a part of a team environment.

  • Ability to perform basic personal hygiene and self-care

  • Ability to lift at least 70 pounds

  • Ability to stand for 4 hours at a time

  • Ability to ride a wide variety of horses, and teach others how to ride, tack and care for horses.

  • Ability to perform vigorous physical activity

  • Ability to build and maintain wire, buck and rail, post and rail and other types of fence

  • Ability to administer medications to horses and basic doctoring of injuries/wounds

  • Ability to drive a truck and trailer; ability to drive and use tractor with implements.
